Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")

(By the way, it's not a peninsula – it's actually larger than the part of Antarctica that touches the south pole. It only looks smaller because the projection stretches the map so much near the poles.) For anyone interested, here's how it looks like under a different projection . That's not countin...

Re: inflection categories using differing affix types

Probably the best thing I could recommend short of emailing you some PDFs (which I could do for you, just send me a PM) is to recommend you read Leonard Bloomfield's 1946 sketch of Proto-Algonquian and read through the sections on verb finals. A very quick Google search got me [urlhttps://home.cc.u...

Re: inflection categories using differing affix types

I still need to figure out how the stems might vary (looks like the Ojibwe verb stem stays fairly consistent??? Well I can't speak for Ojibwe specifically (though given that like much of the "Central" languages it's quite conservative it'll probably be like this) but Algonquian languages as a whole...

Re: Mfalen: an attempted initial sketch

I know you haven't posted anything yet but already I'm intruiged! A phonology with some amount of unusual initial clusters and a tendency to move consonants to the beginning of the following syllables, but relatively straightforward rules to deal with illegal clusters. Interesting. Makes me think of...

Re: inflection categories using differing affix types

I'm looking for languages where a given inflection or category of inflections use differing types & forms of affixes. I'm thinking of something like Arabic's perfective/past vs. imperfective/non-past, where person is basically marked via suffixes (kataba) or prefixes (yaktubu). I'm also somewhat fa...

What sorts of biota/ecosystems might be found in "Antarctica"? I'd like to know so I can get a better picture of the inhabitants and their environment. http://akana.conlang.org/w/images/8/89/Akana_climates_draft2.png This is the latest draft with regards to climate as we have. Re: Native American survival scenario

OK, so I’d better start on the grammar, and I’ll start with the bit that is pretty much set in stone - the nominal inflection, which has been pretty much sorted since day one and has pretty much been immune to tinkering bar one or two minor details. In this first post I’ll cover everything bar posse...

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread

Suppose I have a conculture where a significant minority speaks a conlang (let's call it Language A for the purposes of this question) with a (C)V(C) syllable structure whose consonant inventory is pretty much Skolt Sami plus /ʔ θ ç h/, but has only /a ə ɨ/ for its phonemic vowels. It's in contact ...

OK, finally going to do the final part of this trilogy, sorry it’s take longer than I’d hoped. With this I’ll go into the final changes leading up to the modern language. D-18 had two phases. In D-18a remaining *w merged with *y, as in Arapaho and Cheyenne. This likely took place at the same time as...

Welcome to the bulk of the Pacific Northwest sprachbund: big consonant inventories, ejectives including ejective fricatives (Tlingit's /xʼʷ χʼʷ/ are believed to be found nowhere else in the world), lack of plain velar plosives, lateral obstruents but frequently no lateral approximant, usually three...

So now it turns out that I’ve made so many alterations to the working of relative clauses and their associated morphology in Daléekommos that it isn’t even “Daléekommos” anymore, it’s Áalaléekowoó. Oh well.

I'd be curious to see more information. What is the morpheme breakdown of sbiaw "coyote"? If it's a verb, can it be used transitively? Can I coyote a bottle? Can I bottle a coyote? Well a prefix s- is the near-universal Salishan "nominaliser", though it still occurs on main verbs in certain instanc...

I wonder whether we should try and have more historic ancestors/conquerors outside the Edastean sphere. I'm currently thinking the Lukpanic sphere could do with some more fleshing out in this regard, though I wonder if the Coastal Westerners could share mythic ancestors with other branches in Easter...

So my local youth orchestra TVYO has just had their leaver's concert for those who have reached 18 and are going off to university. I hate to necro, but I'd like to contribute my favourites: Old Skourene, Wede:i and Kebreni, I think probably in that order. Skourene because I love polypersonal conjugation, the retroflexes, the weird TAM, the lack of proper subordination, almost the whole lot really, and I'd be interested to see h...

Also, your short comment about the linguistic differences between the Cad'in and Cuzeians in the Historical outline is quite confusingly worded, and appears to imply that it's the Cuzeians that speak a Central language not the Cad'in.

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")

I've made a couple of minor changes to the accent system of Proto-Muyan (still open to alternative name suggestions), to the effect that the glottal accent can no longer occur before coda stops and the high accent can't occur before coda fricatives. The net effect of this is that the glottal accent ...

Re: Masculine-feminine gender systems beyond IE

What are described as masculine/feminine systems may not necessarily correspond terribly well to the typical IE model - e.g. you could have a system which distinguishes masculine/feminine for humans/animates only (English basically does this), which is somewhat different from the typical IE system ...
